Twenty-Four Years Ago, October 28, 1992

History was made twenty-four years ago. Susan A. Thompson was elected the first, and so far only, woman Mayor of the City of Winnipeg. While Susan broke the glass ceiling, there is still work to do. Women throughout the country still face an uphill battle when it comes to opportunities in politics, business and executive leadership. This needs to change.

Women make a difference. They offer new perspectives, as Susan showed twenty-four years ago. Her book is a call to action for all of us to make more opportunities available to all the exceptional women around us. It is 2016! Now is the time.

October 28, 1992 will go down as one of the most spectacular days of my life. After 118 years, the citizens of the city of Winnipeg elected their first female mayor. I don’t know that I realized the challenges I was about to face at that point, but I certainly understood the magnitude of this accomplishment and its responsibilities. History had been made.

I believe most women do not go into politics for power, but to make things better and to make a difference.
