The 1997 Flood of the Century, Twenty Years Later

Twenty years ago today, the Red River was at its highest point during the Flood of the Century. The city was in a state of national emergency. The extraordinary work of the citizens of Manitoba and Winnipeg; the Canadian military; endless organizations were at its peak.

While those days were very stressful for our city and citizens, we can look back at the courage and hard work everyone in the city displayed and be thankful for the amazing people that live in our city. We will always be most grateful to the members of the Canadian Forces and all who helped us.

On this day, the water may have been raging, but the spirit of the city was alight and up to the task to protect us from the rising water. All we can say is thank you, to all those men and women and even children, who worked long hours in those days to save our city.

Susan Thompson Interviewed by Shaw TV

Susan Thompson was interviewed by Tracy Koga at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the interview was aired January 30th, 2017. This was a lovely conversation between Tracy and Susan that touched on many topics of interest to readers from this website.

Tracy mentioned that 2017 is the 25th anniversary since Susan was elected Mayor of the City of Winnipeg. We will be bringing more information to this website in celebration of this moment in history. As well, the conversation talked about establishing the leadership of women, the Inuit Art Centre and how Winnipeg has changed over the years.

Also, Susan raised a little known fact from the Flood of the Century that is important to remember. Throughout that crisis, Shaw TV provided a valuable public service by covering the daily press conferences and providing information that people needed to save their homes. We would like to thank Shaw TV, not just for this wonderful interview, but also for their service to the community, like throughout the Flood of the Century.

You can find the video here.

Moments in History – A personal note from Susan

Today, November 16, 2016, Winnipeg’s City Council voted unanimously in favor of renaming the Administration Building (510 Main Street) the Susan A. Thompson Building. I am tremendously honored to have this building named after me.

  • 2016 marks the 100th anniversary since Nellie McClung won the right to vote for most women of Manitoba.
  • 2017 marks the 25th anniversary since my election as the first woman to be mayor of the city of Winnipeg.

It is my sincere hope that we take this opportunity to celebrate all the women who have contributed to our great city. The naming of this building is a symbol that we can all achieve anything we put our hearts and minds towards. This is our chance to inspire women and young girls to become the next generation of leaders.

I would like to thank Mayor Bowman, Speaker and City Councillor Devi Sharma, and the City of Winnipeg Councillors for supporting this motion. By doing so, you have said to women throughout Winnipeg that their city welcomes and encourages their participation in politics.

Councillor Devi Sharma spearheaded this effort and I sincerely appreciate her vision. As the first female Council Speaker, she is herself a leader and an inspiration.
